At just a twenty minute drive from Park House hotel & spa, the cathedral city of Chichester has plenty of things to do and see. Whether you are looking for culture, heritage or a shopping excursion, here are some of the best places to visit in Chichester:
Chichester Cathedral: Visible for several miles, this beautifully-preserved building is a haven of calm and history. Widely admired for its architecture, it also has a wealth of interesting features inside, such as artworks by Chagall and Sunderland. Equally surprising are the cathedral’s own pair of nesting Peregrine Falcons, doing a grand job of keeping the pigeons in check. For more information on this fascinating building and a range of events such as special talks and concerts, see the official site: www.chichestercathedral.org.uk
Fishbourne Roman Palace & Gardens: Featuring a large collection of mosaics and other artefacts, along with plenty of revealing exhibits and “hands-on” things to try, this ancient heritage site is well worth a visit. Indeed, armed with a little insight the visitor can still picture the decadence of this once aristocratic dwelling. Special displays and things to do are included for all types of visitor, from children to the visually impaired. Walks and Wildlife on Chichester Canal: Another living piece of the city’s history, Chichester Canal is a wonderful place for a walk, a paddle or an afternoon’s coarse fishing. Once a main artery of local industry this waterway is now a wholly more peaceful place with a surprising head of wildlife; don’t be too surprised if you spot one of the local kingfishers. Boat cruises also run throughout the summer, for a truly relaxing way to discover more about this famous canal. More info here: http://chichestercanal.org.uk/
Curious Corners and Independent Shops: Chichester has a large selection of stores and is well regarded as a shopping destination. Beyond the bigger retailers however, a quirkier independent scene also exists in the city. Try browsing Crane Street and Little London Walk for a more intimate, pedestrianised shopping experience. Here you will find some excellent smaller stores selling everything from vintage wear to crafty gifts, along with cafes and eateries.
Also worth a visit on the first and third Friday of each month is Chichester Farmers Market. This is the place to find delicious locally-sourced food, from speciality cheeses to cracking home-made pies.
Access All Arts: Chichester is also a fantastic city for many forms of art, whether this means painting, sculpture or theatre. Chichester Festival Theatre is always worth a look for an entertaining line up of performances, while you could also revisit our recent arts-themed blog entry for a taste of some of the standout galleries and collections in Chichester.
