Best for…..a mother-and-daughter weekend. The PH20 Spa is beautifully designed to the highest specifications. There’s a vast heated pool (and another outside for summer months), a small but well-equipped gym, and a serene chill-out zone. My Aromatherapy Associates Age Repair Facial, £95 for 90 minutes, was deliciously relaxing to my whole body and masterfully reviving for a tired face.

What an excitement: an unsung British hero…why have none of us heard of it? This small, family-owned hotel (both phrases we love) is a great find. The new spa – even more of a secret than the hotel – is lovely….. with a swimming pool lined with shimmering opal tiles and soft-lit treatment rooms where you can fall into warmed water beds. All extremely comforting. A wonderful place to wallow for the weekend.
